CAPT. WILLIAM NORTHUP was b. 8 December 1732, in South Kingston, Rhode Island; probably the first son, of Nicholas and Freelove (Eldred) Northup He d. 21 May 1827, Newport, Herkimer Co., New York; m. ANN SLOCUM 16 August 1761, Jamestown, Newport Co., Rhode Island (b. 25 May 1742, South Kingston, Rhode Island; d. 6 December 1831, Deerfield, Oneida Co., New York.)

There are some accounts that show a William Northup to be born of Nicholas and Freelove Northup in 1741 and died in 1839. It is not known if these accounts refer to another family altogether, or if the dates are simply conflicting. The earlier date is probably correct and it means that Captain William was likely the first son of Freelove. Nicholas had previously been married to Freelove's elder sister, Abbigail. Nicholas and Freelove nanmed the first daughter, Abbigail. It is possible that Nicholas and Freelove also named a later son William. Notes for CAPT. WILLIAM NORTHUP:

He had been known as a "Captain" which is thought to have been related to ocean going experiences.

John B. Northup has the date of death as May 21, 1827.

Gideon, Nancy, and Ebenezer signed the documents for the sale of William's property in 1836. He died intestate, and it appears that the living children and their spouses, who resided in the area near Deerfield, collectively were required to release the property. Altogether, there were 12 children; including one set of twins, Nancy and Benoni. Thanks to Cousin Wayne Shepard for the wealth of information I have on this line.
